Description
The Pioneer is one of latest meat birds to hit the market. A heritage cross dating back to the 1940s between Turken and Delaware mixed in with a hint of Cornish blood, this breed has been further refined over the past 15 years. Developed to be a slow growing dual-purpose bird with a robust body structure for uniform growth and superior meat quality. Due to the nature of the cross, they have a high heat tolerance, are hardy, and have great feed conversion. The Pioneer is ideal for pasture, small farm, and outdoor commercial setups. They are great foragers and excel free range. Unlike most traditional broilers such as the Cornish Cross, the Pioneer is able to procreate naturally and will lay eggs for years to come. Their meat is known to have a nice balance between light and dark, meeting somewhere in-between a Cornish and Freedom Ranger. Here at Dunlaps’ this is our only sexed meat chicken, chicks are able to be color sexed at a day-old meaning females hatch out brown and males hatch out yellow. About 3% of chicks hatched will have feathered necks. Overall, the Pioneer is one of our best all-around meat chickens. We encourage you to give them a try!
