Due to popular market demand for more and more egg color varieties, we at Dunlaps’ are now offering two Olive Egger varieties. The Backcross Olive Egger for the 2027 season is a cross between Dunlaps’ F1 Olive Egger hen and a Splash Maran rooster. This cross allows for a deeper olive egg to be produced while maintaining a more consistent color throughout laying as compared to an F2 Olive Egger. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the cross they are unable to be sexed as baby chicks and are sold straight run only. However, if you must have hens, our F1 Olive Eggers are available sexed. As this is the first year we are offering this specific cross, exact feather coloring is unknown, but you can expect ranges of grey/blue. Some birds will have head crests while others will not. The temperament of the Backcross leans more on the calmer side compared to our F1 Olive Egger. This is due to the characteristics of the Maran being further amplified in the second generation cross.
Last year for the 2026 season we used Black Copper Maran roosters instead of Splash roosters. Updated pictures of those birds will be available for reference viewing in the near future on this page. They may become available for purchase again in future years to come.
